Setting Up IPTV for Elderly Parents: A Simple, Stress-Free Guide

IPTV can be just as easy as traditional TV for older relatives, as long as it is set up with simplicity in mind: the TV turns on straight into the channel list, favourites are short and familiar, and there is a clear written guide next to the remote.

Many people set up IPTV for parents or grandparents who want a wider choice of programmes but do not want to learn new technology. The goal is a setup where they press one button to turn the TV on and use the up, down and OK buttons for everything else.

Choose the simplest device

Set it up to feel like a normal TV

1. Enable HDMI-CEC on the TV so the stick and TV turn on together and the stick's remote controls TV volume.
2. Set the IPTV app to open on start-up. Many players have a "start on boot" or "launch on start-up" option.
3. Open on the favourites list, not the full channel list.
4. Hide every channel group they will not use.
5. Turn off autoplay previews and unnecessary pop-ups in the device settings.

Build a short, familiar favourites list

Make the text easy to read

• Increase text size in the device's accessibility settings where available.
• Turn on subtitles by default if they prefer them.
• Choose a player with a large, clear guide layout.
• Enable the device's screen reader or audio description options if helpful.

Write a one-page cheat sheet

Print a simple guide with large text and keep it by the remote:

• How to turn the TV on and off.
• How to change channel and volume.
• What to do if the picture freezes: switch the TV off at the wall for 30 seconds and back on.
• Who to call for help, with the phone number.

Supporting them from a distance

Take photos of the settings screens after setup so you can talk them through any changes over the phone. Keep a note of their device, app and login details somewhere safe. Setting a reminder for their renewal date, if you manage the subscription, avoids the TV suddenly stopping working.

Setup questions for older viewers

Can they keep using their aerial channels?

What if they press the wrong button?
