How to Watch IPTV in VLC Media Player (Windows, Mac and Mobile)

VLC is a free, open-source media player that can open an IPTV M3U link directly. It is a quick way to test a playlist on a computer, even if you later use a dedicated IPTV app on your TV.

VLC is not a full IPTV app. It has no TV-style guide, no catch-up and limited channel organisation. What it does well is play streams reliably with very little setup, which makes it ideal for checking whether a problem lies with your TV device or with the stream itself.

Installing VLC

Download VLC from the official VideoLAN website for Windows, Mac or Linux, or from the official app store on Android and iOS. Avoid third-party download sites, which sometimes bundle unwanted software.

Opening your M3U link on Windows or Mac

1. Open VLC.
2. Choose Media, then Open Network Stream on Windows, or File, then Open Network on Mac.
3. Paste your full M3U link into the URL box.
4. Select Play (Windows) or Open (Mac).
5. Open the playlist view with Ctrl+L on Windows or Cmd+Shift+P on Mac to see all channels.

The first channel usually starts playing automatically. Double-click any channel in the playlist to switch. Use the search box at the top of the playlist to find a channel by name.

Opening IPTV in VLC on mobile

On Android and iOS, open VLC, go to the network or "Stream" section, and enter the M3U link. The playlist appears as a list you can scroll. For regular mobile viewing, a dedicated IPTV app with a guide is more comfortable, but VLC is handy for a quick test.

Fixing buffering in VLC

VLC keeps a small buffer by default. Increasing it gives the player more breathing room on busy connections, at the cost of a slightly longer start time.

• On Windows, go to Tools, then Preferences, select "All" under Show settings, then Input/Codecs, and raise Network caching from 1000 ms to around 3000 ms.
• On Mac, go to VLC, then Settings, choose Show All, open Input/Codecs and adjust Network caching the same way.
• Restart VLC for the change to take effect.

Saving your playlist

To avoid pasting the link each time, save the playlist: in the playlist view, choose Media, then Save Playlist to File. Remember the saved file contains your login details, so keep it private and do not upload it anywhere.

VLC's limitations

• No electronic programme guide.
• No catch-up or start-over.
• Very large playlists can be slow to scroll.
• No Xtream Codes login, only M3U links.
