How Much Data Does IPTV Use? SD, HD and 4K Explained

As a rough guide, IPTV uses about 1GB per hour in SD, around 2 to 3GB per hour in HD and around 7GB or more per hour in 4K. The exact figure depends on the stream's bitrate and codec.

Most UK home broadband packages are unlimited, so data use rarely matters at home. It matters much more on mobile data, on capped broadband and on mobile broadband routers, where a few evenings of HD viewing can use a whole month's allowance.

Typical data use per hour

These are typical ranges, not exact values. Fast-moving sport can use more than a static talk show at the same resolution.

Why the numbers vary

• Bitrate: the amount of data per second the provider uses for each stream.
• Codec: HEVC streams can use roughly half the data of older H.264 streams for similar quality. See our HEVC guide.
• Frame rate: 50 or 60 frames per second sport uses more than 25fps films.
• Number of screens: each device streams separately, so two TVs use twice the data.

Data versus speed

Data is the total amount downloaded; speed is how quickly it arrives. A 4K stream needs both a fast connection, around 25 Mbps, and enough data allowance to sustain it. Our internet speed guide covers the speed side.

Checking how much you use

1. Check your broadband account. Many providers show monthly usage in their app.
2. Check your router. Some routers show usage per device.
3. On Android phones, go to Settings, then Network, then Data usage, to see usage per app.
4. On iPhone, go to Settings, then Mobile Data, and scroll to the list of apps.

Reducing data use

• Choose HD rather than 4K on smaller screens where the difference is hard to see.
• Use SD channels on mobile data, where available.
• Close the player when you finish; do not leave it running on a paused channel.
• Turn off automatic playback of previews in the app if it has that option.

Mobile broadband and 4G/5G home routers

Many people in the UK use 4G or 5G routers at home. Some plans are unlimited, others are capped or have fair-use limits. If yours is capped, stick to HD, keep an eye on usage in the first month and avoid leaving TVs streaming when nobody is watching.

Data questions

Does the TV guide use much data?

No. Guide data is small text files, measured in megabytes rather than gigabytes.

Does pausing a live channel use data?

Some apps keep downloading while paused. Stop the stream fully if you step away for a long time.

Is unlimited broadband really unlimited?

Most UK fixed-line packages are genuinely unlimited. Check your provider's terms if you are unsure.
