How to Watch IPTV on an Android Phone or Tablet

An Android phone or tablet makes a handy second screen for IPTV, whether you are in the kitchen, the garden or another room. Setup takes a few minutes with a player app from Google Play.

Mobile viewing is also useful for testing. If a channel stutters on the TV, trying it on your phone next to the router quickly shows whether the problem is the TV device or the connection.

Choosing a player

Search Google Play for an IPTV player that supports Xtream Codes or M3U logins, and check it has recent updates and good reviews. Some players are designed mainly for TVs and feel awkward on touch screens; others are built for phones. Our player app guide can help you choose.

Setting up

1. Install the player from Google Play.
2. Open it and choose to add a new user or playlist.
3. Pick your login type: Xtream Codes or M3U.
4. Enter your details. On a phone you can copy and paste from your message, which avoids typing errors.
5. Save and let the channels load.

Saving mobile data

Video uses a lot of data, especially in HD. An hour of HD viewing can use a few gigabytes, which adds up quickly on a limited mobile plan. To keep costs down:

• Use Wi-Fi at home and wherever else it is available.
• Choose SD or lower-quality channels when on mobile data, if your service offers them.
• Set a data warning in Android settings under Network, then Data usage.
• Close the player fully when you finish, so it does not keep streaming in the background.

Getting the picture onto your TV

Some players can cast to a Chromecast or Google TV device. Alternatively, Android's screen cast or Smart View on Samsung phones can mirror your screen to compatible TVs. Tablet tips

Tablets make excellent portable TVs. Use landscape mode for the guide, add favourites for quick access and consider a stand for kitchen viewing. Many players support picture-in-picture on Android, letting you keep a channel playing in a small window while you use other apps.

Battery and heat

Streaming video is demanding. Lower the screen brightness a little, avoid watching while charging on a soft surface where heat builds up, and close other apps you are not using.

Does watching on my phone count as a device?

Yes. It counts towards your simultaneous device limit while it is streaming.

Can I download programmes to watch offline?

Live channels cannot usually be downloaded. Use Wi-Fi viewing instead.

Why does the picture change quality on mobile data?

Mobile signal varies as you move. Some players drop quality to keep the stream playing.
