IPTV EPG Guide: How to Get the TV Guide Working

The EPG, or electronic programme guide, is the grid that shows what is on now and next. When it works, IPTV feels just like traditional TV. When it is blank or wrong, a few simple checks usually fix it.

The guide is not part of the video stream itself. It is separate data that your app downloads and then matches to each channel. That separation explains most EPG problems: the video can work perfectly while the guide is missing, because the two pieces of data have not been connected.

How the EPG works

Providers publish guide data in a format called XMLTV. Each channel in your playlist has an ID, and each programme in the XMLTV data is tagged with the same ID. Your player app downloads the guide, matches IDs and fills the grid. With Xtream Codes logins, the guide usually loads automatically. With M3U playlists, you may need to add a separate EPG link.

Adding an EPG link

1. Find your EPG URL. Your provider will supply it if it is needed; it often ends in xmltv.php or .xml.
2. Open the app's guide settings. Look for "EPG", "TV guide" or "XMLTV source".
3. Add the link and associate it with your playlist if the app asks.
4. Update the guide. Choose "update EPG" or "refresh guide" and let it finish.

Fixing a blank guide

• Give it time. The first download can take a few minutes on large lists.
• Force an update. Use the refresh option in guide settings.
• Check the link. A single wrong character stops the guide loading.
• Check storage. On streaming sticks with little free space, the guide may fail to save. Clear unused apps.
• Some channels have no guide. Not every channel carries listings; this is normal for a small number.

Fixing wrong times

If listings are consistently an hour early or late, the problem is almost always a time zone setting. Check your device's date, time and time zone first; it should be set to the UK and update automatically. Then look for an "EPG time shift" or "timezone offset" setting in the app and set it to zero, or adjust by one hour if needed. This commonly happens around the clock change in March and October.

Making the guide more useful

Most players let you hide channel groups you never watch, which makes the guide far easier to scroll. Adding favourites creates a short personal guide with only the channels you care about. How often should the guide update?

Once a day is enough for most people. Setting the app to update automatically overnight keeps listings fresh without slowing down your evening viewing.

Why do some channels show "No information"?

Either that channel has no guide data or its ID does not match. A small number of channels without listings is normal.

Does the guide use a lot of data?

No. Guide data is text and is tiny compared with video.

Can I see more than a week ahead?

That depends on how much data the provider publishes. Most guides cover several days.

Most EPG problems come down to a missing link, an incomplete first download or a time zone offset. Check those three and the guide will usually spring to life.
