IPTV Black Screen but Sound Working? Fixes That Work

A black screen usually means the stream is arriving but your device cannot display it, often because of a decoder setting, an HDMI handshake problem or a display mode mismatch. The good news is that most causes are quick to fix.

Start by noticing exactly what happens. Is there sound but no picture? Is the whole TV black, including menus? Does it affect one channel or all of them? Each pattern points to a different cause.

If there is sound but no picture

This is the most common pattern, and it nearly always points to video decoding.

  1. Switch the decoder. In the player's settings, change between hardware and software decoding and try the channel again.
  2. Change the stream format. Some apps offer MPEGTS or HLS. Try the other option.
  3. Try another player. If the channel works in a different app, the original app's settings are the cause.
  4. Check codec support. An older device may not support the codec used by some 4K channels. See our HEVC guide.

If the whole screen is black, including menus

This points to the connection between the device and the TV.

  • Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and reconnect firmly.
  • Try a different HDMI port and a different cable.
  • Unplug the streaming device's power for 30 seconds.
  • Avoid HDMI switches or cheap splitters while testing; connect directly to the TV.
  • Make sure the device is powered from its mains adapter, not a TV USB port.

If it happens only on 4K or HDR channels

The device may be sending a format the TV input is not set to accept. Enable the enhanced HDMI mode for that port in the TV's settings (such as Input Signal Plus on Samsung or HDMI Ultra HD Deep Colour on LG). If that does not help, set the device's dynamic range to "match content" rather than "always HDR", or temporarily lower the output resolution to test. Our 4K guide covers these settings.

If it happens only on some channels

A small number of channels may be temporarily offline. Try again later, and if it continues, tell support which channels are affected and at what time.

HDCP and protected content

HDCP is a copy protection handshake between the device and TV. When it fails, some apps show a black screen. Reconnecting the cable, restarting both the TV and the device, and avoiding older AV receivers or splitters usually resolves it.

Clearing the app's cache

A corrupted cache can cause strange playback behaviour. In the device's app settings, clear the cache of your IPTV player (not the data, which would remove your login), then restart it. Our restart and reset guide explains the difference.

Black screen questions

Why does the picture come back when I change channel?

The stream restarted and the decoder reinitialised. If it happens often, try the other decoder option.

Can a faulty HDMI cable cause this?

Yes, especially with 4K. Try a High Speed or Premium High Speed certified cable.

Could it be my account?

An account problem usually shows an error message rather than a black screen with sound. Check the app's account screen to be sure.

Sound but no picture means decoder settings; a completely black TV means HDMI; 4K-only means display mode. Match the pattern to the fix and the picture will usually return quickly.
