IPTV on Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer

Google TV devices are among the easiest ways to watch IPTV because they include the Google Play Store, giving you access to the most popular Android TV player apps.

Google stopped selling the Chromecast with Google TV in 2024 and replaced it with the Google TV Streamer, but both work in the same way for IPTV. Many TVs from Sony, TCL, Hisense and others also run Google TV built in, so these steps apply to them too.

Which Google TV device do you have?

• Chromecast with Google TV (HD): outputs up to 1080p. Fine for HD viewing.
• Chromecast with Google TV (4K): supports 4K, HDR and HEVC.
• Google TV Streamer: the newer model with more storage and a faster processor, plus an Ethernet port.
• TVs with Google TV built in: capabilities depend on the TV model.

Installing a player app

1. From the home screen, select Apps or use the search button on the remote.
2. Search for your chosen player, such as TiviMate or IPTV Smarters.
3. Select Install and wait for it to finish.
4. Open the app and choose Xtream Codes or M3U login.
5. Enter your details and let channels and the guide load.

Storage tips

The original Chromecast with Google TV has limited storage, and IPTV apps store channel lists and guide data. Keep only the apps you use, clear app cache every few weeks under Settings, then Apps, and avoid installing several IPTV players at once. The Google TV Streamer has more room but benefits from the same habits.

Settings for smooth playback

• Display and sound, then Resolution: choose the highest your TV supports.
• Match content frame rate: set to "Seamless only" or "Always" to reduce judder, if your TV handles the switch well.
• Network: connect to the 5GHz Wi-Fi band, or use Ethernet. The Streamer has a built-in Ethernet port; the Chromecast needs a USB-C adapter with Ethernet and power pass-through.
• In the player app: keep hardware decoding on.

Casting versus installing an app

Chromecast devices can also receive casts from phone apps. For IPTV, installing a player directly on the Google TV device is better: the stream goes straight to the TV, your phone stays free and the remote controls everything. Casting is handy for a quick share, but not for regular viewing.

Parental controls and profiles

Google TV supports kids profiles with app restrictions, and most IPTV players add their own PIN locks for categories. Using both gives you good control over what younger viewers can access. See our parental controls guide.

Can I use a Google TV device without a Google account?

Google TV offers a basic mode without apps, but you need a Google account to install player apps from Google Play.

Is the HD Chromecast good enough?

For HD TVs, yes. For 4K TVs, choose the 4K model or the Streamer.

Why is my Chromecast slow after a while?

Usually low storage. Clear cache, remove unused apps and restart it.

Google TV devices give you the full Play Store. Install one good player, keep storage tidy, use 5GHz Wi-Fi or Ethernet and you have one of the smoothest IPTV setups available.
